Our Psychiatric Services Reviews

Mildred Hughes

Walking through those doors the first day, my hands wouldn't stop shaking. Alcohol destroyed my relationships and left me completely isolated. Thankfully, the counselors here actually listened instead of lecturing. Sitting in these exact group circles changed everything for me. Hearing other people share their raw, real struggles made the loneliness disappear. Celebrating six months sober today. This place gives you your life back.

Coming here felt like a massive leap into the unknown, especially dealing with all that shame I carried around. The team at Ascend Recovery Center didn't treat me like a problem to be solved, but a person worth helping. There were days I wanted to pack my bags and bolt, but the support here kept me grounded. Now, I actually wake up without that weight on my chest. It's hard to put into words, but this place truly changed my trajectory.

Had an amazing experience here, one of the most personable groups of people to come to for recovery and truly helped me with developing the tools necessary to start my recovery. Did the 10 day detox and got exactly what I wanted out of the experience: healthy nutrition, great groups, and even your own personal TV in the rooms to help pass the time. If you're serious about your recovery and want a wholesome, worthwhile and safe place to do it, I recommend coming here.

Levels of care

Levels of Care We Provide

Ascend Recovery Center delivers psychiatric assessment and medication management across every level of care on one Albuquerque campus, so a client's medical oversight stays consistent as their level of support changes.

01Mental Health Residential

Mental health residential care places a mental health condition at the center of treatment, with psychiatric assessment and medication management delivered on site by the medical directors. Living in structured care keeps the medical and therapeutic sides of a client's plan coordinated from the first evaluation forward.

02Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

A partial hospitalization program continues full clinical days of therapy and medication management while a client returns home each evening. Psychiatric review stays part of the schedule, so medication adjustments and therapeutic work keep pace as a client steps down from residential care.

03Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

An intensive outpatient program offers several clinical hours a few days a week, so a client can return to work, school, and family while staying in treatment. Medication management and psychiatric check-ins continue on this schedule, keeping care steady during the transition home.

04Outpatient

Outpatient care provides lighter, ongoing support with medication review as a client's symptoms stabilize. Regular appointments keep a client connected to the same medical team for monitoring and thoughtful adjustments over time.

05Medication Management

Medication management is the ongoing process of prescribing, monitoring, and adjusting psychiatric medication so it stays safe and effective. Overseen by the medical directors, it sits alongside a client's therapy rather than in a separate silo, so changes in medication and changes in therapeutic work inform each other.

Medical and therapeutic care in one plan
The client's psychiatric provider and therapists work from the same treatment plan, so a medication adjustment and a shift in therapeutic work stay in sync rather than living in separate offices.
Assessment comes first
A structured evaluation combines validated tools such as the PHQ-9, GAD-7, and Columbia Suicide Screening with a full biopsychosocial history, so the plan targets the real cause of a symptom rather than a label.
Individualized medication management
The medical directors review what has worked before, choose an approach with the client, and monitor how the client responds over time so adjustments are made thoughtfully rather than set and forgotten.
Coordinated care for co-occurring substance use
When a mental health condition and a substance use disorder occur together, psychiatric care is coordinated with addiction treatment through integrated dual diagnosis care, including MAT when appropriate.
Psychiatric care that follows the client
Because the full continuum sits in one building, psychiatric services follow the client from detox and residential care through day treatment, outpatient, and telehealth without changing the treatment team.
Confidential, insurance-verified admissions
One confidential call covers assessment, insurance verification, and scheduling. Ascend is approved for Medicaid, Blue Cross, United Healthcare, and Molina, and in network with VACCN, TriWest, and CompPsych.

How admissions works

Our Psychiatric Services Admission Process

1

Call our confidential line

One conversation covers a first screening, insurance verification, and scheduling. Support begins with the first call, and nothing shared is used against the person who reaches out.

2

Clinical assessment

Evidence-based screenings, including PHQ-9, GAD-7, the Columbia Suicide Screening, and an ASAM level-of-care assessment, match each client to the right program.

3

The right level of care

If medically supervised detox is needed, the team coordinates a safe arrival with 24/7 nursing. If an outpatient level fits, care starts there instead.

4

Start treatment

Once a plan and coverage are confirmed, treatment begins, with therapy and medication where appropriate carrying through each level of care.

For families

How to help a loved one who needs psychiatric care

1

Recognize the signs

Tolerance, withdrawal, failed attempts to cut back, and use that continues despite harm are all worth paying attention to. A cluster of signs over time matters more than any one.

2

Start the conversation

Choose a calm, private moment. Lead with care and specific observations rather than blame, listen more than lecture, and offer a concrete next step.

3

Avoid harmful approaches

Skip shaming and ultimatums delivered in anger, and never encourage a person to stop a substance abruptly on their own, since some withdrawals are dangerous.

4

Connect them with care

One confidential call to Ascend covers education, options, and insurance. In a crisis, call 911, or call or text the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

Psychiatric Services FAQs

Who oversees psychiatric care at Ascend?
Our psychiatric services and medication management are overseen by our medical directors and coordinated with the client's therapy, so the medical and therapeutic parts of the client's care work from the same plan.
What happens during a psychiatric assessment?
A psychiatric assessment includes screenings such as the PHQ-9 and GAD-7, the Columbia Suicide Screening, an ASAM Level of Care Assessment or LOCUS for mental health, a full biopsychosocial history, and nutrition and pain screens. If a screening flags a concern, our team follows up before making recommendations.
What conditions do psychiatric services treat?
Our psychiatric services support adults living with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADHD, and the effects of trauma, including situations where a mental health condition and a substance use disorder occur together.
How does medication management work?
Medication management is individualized and overseen by our medical directors. They review the client's history, discuss options with the client, and monitor how the client responds over time so adjustments can be made thoughtfully. Because psychiatric care and therapy share one plan, the two stay in sync.
Does Ascend use methadone for co-occurring opioid use disorder?
No. Methadone is not in our formulary. Methadone for opioid use disorder is provided only at federally licensed opioid treatment programs, and we refer out when it is the right fit. For co-occurring opioid or alcohol use disorder we offer Suboxone, Vivitrol, and Sublocade.
Do psychiatric services continue as the client changes levels of care?
Yes. Because Ascend offers the full continuum in one building, psychiatric services follow the client from detox and residential care through day treatment, outpatient care, and telehealth, keeping their medical care consistent.
Can psychiatric care address both mental health and addiction?
Yes. Our medical directors work within our integrated dual diagnosis care, so when a mental health condition and a substance use disorder occur together, both are managed as part of one coordinated plan.
Does insurance cover psychiatric services?
Insurance often helps cover medically necessary psychiatric services, and coverage depends on the client's plan and clinical need. We are approved for Medicaid, Blue Cross, United Healthcare, and Molina, and in network with VACCN, TriWest, and CompPsych. We verify the client's benefits before they commit.
