From people who recovered here
Our PTSD Treatment Reviews
Walking through those doors the first day, my hands wouldn't stop shaking. Alcohol destroyed my relationships and left me completely isolated. Thankfully, the counselors here actually listened instead of lecturing. Sitting in these exact group circles changed everything for me. Hearing other people share their raw, real struggles made the loneliness disappear. Celebrating six months sober today. This place gives you your life back.
Coming here felt like a massive leap into the unknown, especially dealing with all that shame I carried around. The team at Ascend Recovery Center didn't treat me like a problem to be solved, but a person worth helping. There were days I wanted to pack my bags and bolt, but the support here kept me grounded. Now, I actually wake up without that weight on my chest. It's hard to put into words, but this place truly changed my trajectory.
Had an amazing experience here, one of the most personable groups of people to come to for recovery and truly helped me with developing the tools necessary to start my recovery. Did the 10 day detox and got exactly what I wanted out of the experience: healthy nutrition, great groups, and even your own personal TV in the rooms to help pass the time. If you're serious about your recovery and want a wholesome, worthwhile and safe place to do it, I recommend coming here.
Levels of care
PTSD Treatment Programs
Ascend Recovery Center treats trauma and PTSD across a full continuum of care on one Albuquerque campus, so clients can start at the level that fits and step down as they stabilize without switching providers or restarting therapy.
01Mental Health Residential
Mental health residential care can treat PTSD as the primary condition in a structured, live-in setting when the effects of trauma are severe. Around-the-clock support gives clients the stability to begin trauma-informed work such as EMDR and CBT at a pace that respects their sense of safety.
02Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
A partial hospitalization program delivers full clinical days of trauma-focused therapy while clients return home each evening. It keeps the structure of residential care in place as clients step down and continue processing distressing memories with their team.
03Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
An intensive outpatient program offers several clinical hours a few days a week, so clients can keep processing trauma while returning to work, school, and family. Group and individual sessions keep CBT and DBT skills sharp during the transition back to daily life.
04Outpatient
Outpatient care provides lighter, ongoing therapy and relapse-prevention support, with telehealth options, as symptoms ease and clients stabilize. It keeps clients connected to the same clinical team that already knows their story.
05Medication Management
Medication management is coordinated by our medical directors to support sleep, mood, and anxiety alongside therapy. Psychiatric care is integrated with trauma treatment so the whole picture is handled by one connected team.

Treatment timeline
What to Expect During PTSD Treatment at Ascend?
1. A thorough, unhurried intake
Care begins with a full biopsychosocial history and the Columbia Suicide Screening, PHQ-9, and GAD-7, so the clinical team understands the whole person and builds an individualized plan. Clients are not pushed to relive their trauma before they are ready.
2. Building safety and coping skills
Care focuses on establishing safety and daily structure while CBT and DBT help clients manage intense emotions and distress. When co-occurring substance use requires it, care can begin with medical detox and 24/7 LPN nursing.
3. Trauma processing with EMDR and therapy
When a client is ready and it is clinically appropriate, EMDR delivered by EMDR-trained therapists helps reprocess distressing memories, supported by individual, group, and family therapy.
4. Step-down care and relapse prevention
As a client gains stability, they step down through day treatment and outpatient care within Ascend, keeping the same team and building relapse-prevention and coping plans that support the long term.

How admissions works
Our PTSD Treatment Admission Process
Call our confidential line
One conversation covers a first screening, insurance verification, and scheduling. Support begins with the first call, and nothing shared is used against the person who reaches out.
Clinical assessment
Evidence-based screenings, including PHQ-9, GAD-7, the Columbia Suicide Screening, and an ASAM level-of-care assessment, match each client to the right program.
The right level of care
If medically supervised detox is needed, the team coordinates a safe arrival with 24/7 nursing. If an outpatient level fits, care starts there instead.
Start treatment
Once a plan and coverage are confirmed, treatment begins, with therapy and medication where appropriate carrying through each level of care.
PTSD Treatment Led by Licensed Clinicians at Ascend
Ascend is led by an experienced behavioral health team focused on quality care and strong outcomes.
Know the signs
What are the common signs of PTSD?
No single sign confirms a substance use disorder, but a cluster over time is worth a professional conversation.
Intrusive memories and flashbacks
Unwanted memories or flashbacks that make a past event feel like it is happening again, often triggered by a reminder.
Nightmares and distressing dreams
Recurring nightmares or distressing dreams connected to the experience that disrupt sleep and rest.
Avoiding reminders
Steering clear of people, places, conversations, or activities that bring the event to mind.
Negative changes in mood and thinking
Persistent guilt, shame, or hopelessness, feeling numb, or feeling detached from others.
Hyperarousal and being on edge
Being easily startled, feeling constantly on guard, irritability, or difficulty concentrating.
Using substances to quiet distress
Turning to alcohol or other substances to ease flashbacks, anxiety, or sleeplessness, a pattern often called self-medication.

Recognize the signs
Tolerance, withdrawal, failed attempts to cut back, and use that continues despite harm are all worth paying attention to. A cluster of signs over time matters more than any one.
Start the conversation
Choose a calm, private moment. Lead with care and specific observations rather than blame, listen more than lecture, and offer a concrete next step.
Avoid harmful approaches
Skip shaming and ultimatums delivered in anger, and never encourage a person to stop a substance abruptly on their own, since some withdrawals are dangerous.
Connect them with care
One confidential call to Ascend covers education, options, and insurance. In a crisis, call 911, or call or text the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
